Materials:

Sketchbook or paper


Pencil (recommended: HB grade)

Eraser

Tablet (optional)

Instructions:

FIRST THINGS FIRST!

A set of shapes including a circle, square, triangle, rectangle, straight line, and curve line.

1. Draw these basic shapes: a circle, a square, a triangle, a rectangle, a straight line, a curved line.

You can draw almost anything with these basic shapes. 

2. Determine which parts of the car, truck, and bus are big, medium, and small.

Begin drawing with the big parts,  then the medium parts, then the small parts.

How to Draw a Car

1. Identify the big, medium, and small parts.

2. For the body, draw a horizontal rectangle.

A smaller rectangle and triangle on each side drawn on top of the body.

3. For the head, draw a smaller rectangle with a triangle on each side.

4. For the wheels, draw two tiny circles at the bottom of the body.

The detailed form of the car with windows, lights, door handle, and bumper.

5. Add the details.

Beep! Beep! What a funky car!

Let's draw the truck now.

How to Draw a Truck

Just like the car, we’ll also use basic shapes.

1. Identify the big, medium, and small parts.

2. For the body, draw a long rectangle.

The basic form of the truck with the body, head, and wheels.

3. For the head or cab, draw a vertical rectangle with a small triangle on the upper right along the center of the body.

4. For the wheels, draw two circles at the bottom of the body.

The detailed form of the truck with windows, lights, door handle, cargo bed, and bumper.

5. Add the details.

Truck and roll!

Let's draw the bus now.

How to Draw a Bus

1. Identify the big, medium, and small parts.

2. For the body, draw a big rectangle.

3. For the engine compartment, draw a square on the body's lower right side.

4. For the wheels, draw one circle at the bottom of the body and one circle at the bottom of the engine compartment.

5. For the windows, draw 10 small rectangles across the upper portion of the body.

6. Add the details.

Here comes the wee bus!

It's SO simple, right? Now you can draw another car, truck, or bus along with your kid!

Tips for art-mazing success:

  • Color your drawings. 
  • Explore the basic shapes we used to draw other vehicles, such as a race car, a monster truck, or even an excavator! 
  • In the background, add drivers, traffic lights, roads, and whatever you imagine.
